In the world of textiles, fishnet is a material that has an open, diamond shaped knit. The material is often used in the making of stockings, tights or body stockings. The fishnet stockings are available in a wide variety of colors. The most often used color is the traditional matte black. Fishnet stockings are popular within the Goth and punk fashion today but they are also seen in the mainstream as one of the many fashion statements.

Nowadays, the fishnet stockings have become an updated, more fashionable replacement of old fashioned nylons or pantyhose. Many young women are using them as a part of their club wear fashion, burlesque shows and into the even more modern urban women’s wear. These saucy mesh stockings can be worn at any time of the day, though there are many factors that can influence their appropriateness. These factors include the size of the mesh, color of the stockings, the footwear and clothing that they are worn with and of course, the condition of the fishnet stockings themselves.

The mesh size that is any greater than the standard tine holes which is approximately 1/16th inch wide when worn is generally inappropriate for everyday, formal and especially professional attire. Reserve the large mesh fishnet stockings for the more casual settings like clubs and burlesque parties as they tend to give that costume-y effect. The subdued colors of black, brown or nude fishnet stockings are perfect for everyday wear while giving off a bit of zing to your ordinary outfit. Natural flesh toned fishnet stockings can also be used in conservative workplaces and they are actually a more fabulous modern alternative to the common nude pantyhose. Avoid wearing eye-popping fishnet stockings to your office unless you are working in an artsy or creative field.

For a fun option that could work on the job, you can wear fishnet stockings or knee socks underpants to just give a sneak peek of the mesh between the top of your shoe and pant hem. They are also stylish to be worn with boots, pumps, kitten heels or flat shoes coupled with a dress or a skirt. Just make sure that the hemline falls no higher than knee length, for the look to be suitable for formal settings. Mini skirts with fishnet stockings often give off a shoddy vibe, but a more classy style would be to use a flattering pencil skirt, or knee length sheath dress, wrap dress or flared skirt with them.

Remember that like other hosiery, fishnet stockings too have their expiry date. Though they are made of thousands of tiny holes, wearing fishnets that have a poor condition which is marked by snags and tears is completely undesirable. Throw them out or at least keep them for other in-the-house use. Back in time, fishnet stockings were considered to be a sort of sexy undergarment, but fast forward to the present, the mesh hosiery is now becoming an item of fashion worn by powerful women of today.
